3 out of 5 stars Classic example of an oxymoron: "PowerRoller (floor) brush"   January 6, 2009
B. J. Lewis (Highlands Ranch, CO)
A roller is a roller; a brush is a brush. A roller "rolls" over the surface; a brush scrubs. Duh! To compare the PowerRoller (I WILL NOT CALL IT A BRUSH) to a standard carpet cleaner -- my Hoover SteamVac, for example -- is (and here comes a classic example of a cliche) like comparing oranges and apples.

This, however, is NOT saying it will not clean a carpet. It just won't scrub a carpet. Think of using a damp cleaning rag to rub over a fresh spill. It may be enough in that situation, but it probably won't be enough for a deeper, older stain.

The ideal consumer for this product is someone who has several precious oriental area rugs who wants to KEEP them clean without inflicting additional wear and tear in the process. If that applies to you, I HIGHLY recomment this machine. (And YOU can probably afford the somewhat high purchase price.)

I don't have oriental rugs; I have three little dogs. But I also have two floors of carpeted stairs, and that justifies my appreciation for the ease of using the accessories. In addition, the Oxy Gen 2 Power Tool is great for the occasional doggie stain.

I have to laugh at the "replace the roller in six months" admonition. Six months is my average between carpet cleanings, but then I don't have little ones running in and out.

This machine won't fit everyone's needs. Its advantages and disadvantages are extremely specific. Buy or don't buy accordingly.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for Hardwood Floors - Good for Rugs - Ok for carpet   January 5, 2009
Charles Evans (North Carolina)
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R8WN4LLKPSCV7 In the video review I compare the Bissell ProDry with the Bissell 1200B SpotBot Hands-Free Compact Deep Cleaner Carpet Cleaner and the Bissell 9400 ProHeat 2X Select Upright Deep Carpet Cleaner While the review references all models only the Bissell ProDry is seen in action.

he Bissell ProDry has a very novel approach to cleaning surfaces. Instead of using a large amount of water/solution and scrubbing the Bissell ProDry uses a motion that is similar to a paint roller that dabs and swabs the surface. This helps to keep the surface drier and helps to keep the fibers in carpet from being damaged.

Advantages to the ProDry

- The paint rolling motion is easier on your carpet - this is especially true to berber carpets and area rugs. The more aggressive ProHeat 2x has a tendency to snag on coarser fibers.
- Works great at cleaning hardwood floors. The Bissell ProDry does not overly soak the wood and it the cleaning motion is excellent at removing dirt.
- A solid choice for area rugs since the Bissell ProDry does not soak the rug through. The gentle rolling action is also preferred to aggressive scrubbing action.
- Easy set-up. You can go from stop to cleaning in less than 5 minutes.
- Lighter than the ProHeat 2x

Areas for improvement -

- Can't tell that it is very effective on standard carpets. The carpet barely becomes damp, and without the scrubbing action it doesn't appear to be effective at removing stains.
- Replacement rolling pads are expensive - a two-pack will cost you between $40-50. This seems to be excessively expensive for something that is basically a paint roller.
- While the Bissell ProDry is great for Hardwood floors and area rugs - I am not sure that is enough functionality to justify the purchase price.

Final Tally -

If you need a carpet cleaner for your homes carpets investigate the Bissell 9400 ProHeat 2X Select Upright Deep Carpet Cleaner

If you need a carpet cleaner to remove occasional spills and stains you may want to investigate Bissell 1200B SpotBot Hands-Free Compact Deep Cleaner Carpet Cleaner

However, if you have a minimal amount of carpet but have hardwood floors and area rugs the Bissell ProDry may just be the carpet cleaner for you ....

Overall 4 stars
Carpet - 2 1/2 stars
Hardwood floors - 5 stars
Area Rugs - 4 Stars

3 out of 5 stars Not as nice as the hoover   January 4, 2009
M. Hyman (Seattle, WA USA)
There are aspects of this product that I like, and aspects that I don't. In general, though, I would suggest the Hoover SteamVac instead.

Pros:
* Very easy to assemble. The handle bar slides into the unit, you screw it in and screw in a holder, and you are finished.
* As advertised, the carpets do dry very quickly. Much faster than those cleaned with the Hoover.
* It is motorized, so it is less effort to push because the wheels just go on their own.
* Quiet

Cons:
* The power button is located down the back base of the handle. It is awkward to find and too small. It is much nicer when the power button is on the top of the handle where your fingers are. With this unit you have to put the handle into the vertical position so that you don't have to fight the motorized wheels, and then look to find the button to turn it off.
* There isn't a measuring unit for the cleaner. It tells you to put in 3oz, but you have to guess at what that is. By contrast, the Hoover has the measuring unit built in to the water tank.
* The dirty tank drains through an opening that is about 1-1.5 inches in diameter. This drains fine, but it means that if any dirt is collected in the tank you can't clean it out easily. You also have to shift the unit around a bit to get the water out.

When I cleaned the carpet, I did not get much, if any, dirt into the dirty water tank. This could be because it goes through a lint filter first. But I have a feeling that it is because the unit doesn't clean as aggressively as my other carpet cleaner. When I clean with the Hoover the dirty tank comes out filled with dark liquid letting me know I've really gotten a lot of dirt out.

This could be a difference in technology, in that the Bissel says that unlike other carpet cleaners, the liquid is mostly on the brush and thus the carpet does not get as wet and drys faster. This certainly is true, in that with the Hoover it can take a few hours to get fully dry and with the Bissel the carpets were dry in about 20 minutes.

Regardless, I don't feel like it got nearly as much dirt out of the carpets.

3 out of 5 stars Sleek design, easy to assemble and use, excellent spot cleaning, mediocre deep carpet cleaning.   January 4, 2009
Larry Diamond (Austin, TX USA)
This is probably the best looking carpet cleaner I have seen. Extremely sleek, but that is not why most people buy carpet cleaners. If you want a deep carpet cleaner that applies a lot of heat and cleaning ability to get out dirt that is bound in carpet and in pads, this is not the machine for you. I have bought and used the Hoover F5914-900 SteamVac which is in the same price range and is an excellent deep carpet cleaner. The Prodry does not produce nearly the same results for deep carpet cleaning. With three cats and a dog a good deep clean is essential to us.

However the Prodry does as promised dry in 30 minutes. It did leave our carpet looking cleaner and smelling fresher. It simply was not as deep a clean throughout the fibers and into the pad below as other products can produce. It was an excellent spot cleaner with both of the attachments that were provided and we found it to work very well on stairs. The tough-stain tool does just that, takes out tough-stains and is a snap to switch to it or the Oxygen 2 tool. We also tried it on a stain on a chair and the tough stain tool did a good job.

It was also easier to assemble than the Hoover and very easy to operate and empty. If you have carpets and no or few pets and are looking to maintain those carpets and do a semi-deep clean a few times a year I would recommend this. If you want to have an excellent spot cleaner, I would recommend this. However for deep cleaning on well used carpets, I would look elsewhere to other Bissell products or the Hoover product I mentioned earlier.

2 out of 5 stars Buy a Bissell ProHeat instead, you won't be disappointed   January 3, 2009
R. Phillips (MS USA)
The good things about this product are that it is relatively lightweight for a carpet cleaner, it is easy to fill with soap and water, and it leaves the carpet looking nice when done.

However, if you get stains in your carpet frequently, this will not be the product for you....and it wasn't for me. If there is something to spill on my carpet, I will spill it. I also have pets - enough said. I tried this out on the soda stain and what was left when my furball left me a furball on my bedroom carpet. I went over it with this machine several times and it did not get the stains out. They were still clearly visible when I was done. I have had a Bissell ProHeat for about a year now and I absolutely love it (so much that I bought my mom one a few months ago). When I finished earlier with this carpet cleaner, I thought to myself, "These stains would be nothing for my Bissell ProHeat 2X." Later I had to prove it to myself so I went ahead and pulled out my ProHeat and the stains came right out. The brushes work so much better. I hate to compare the machines like this, but for just a few extra dollars, you can get a really fantastic machine and I think it is worth it to guide you to that. If you are concerned about the carpet being wet, there is a ProHeat model that comes with dryers as well. This carpet cleaner is easy to maneuver but the water tank is so small. I just think there aren't enough advantages to this machine to recommend it, but I also think the Bissell ProHeat 2X is a true 5-star machine and highly recommend it if you need to deep clean your carpet and get rid of some yucky stains.
