gets the job done January 4, 2009 tc (New York, NY) I bought this product a few months ago. I was a little hesitant because of all the negative reviews, but figured I'd give it a try anyway. I honestly didn't find anything difficult about programming it. I glanced at the directions, then programmed it without a problem. It may not be the most intuitive digital device out there to program, but I got the job done in under 5 minutes. So far it has been very reliable. I have it programmed to dispense food 3 times a day. I'm home for at least 2 of them and it's never skipped a meal. I only have 2 minor complaints. First, the dish is permanently fixed to the feeder so it can't really be washed in the sink or dishwasher. It's really not that big of a deal, I wipe it down every few days and it's fine. I'm just lazy and enjoy things that can be put in the dishwasher. The other thing that bothered me isn't really a problem with the product, just the affect it had on my cat. At first he didn't really understand that it would only dispense food at certain intervals so he would sit around and stare at the feeder waiting for it to give him food. He would do this for hours at a time and it made me feel kind of bad, but after a few weeks he got accustomed to it and now doesn't pay any attention to it until he hears it dispense his food. I'd recommend this product. I live alone and often work late or go out after work and it makes me feel better knowing that my cat will be fed even if I'm not there to do it. It's also nice to know that if anything ever happens to me, my little buddy will be taken care of by technology until my family or friends remember to come rescue him.
Works great! January 2, 2009 SammyKat (Surprise, AZ, USA) I really like this product. Ok, so yes the programming doesn't make sense to me and I have to get out the manual whenever I have to change the settings, but the same is true for my VCR. Luckily my cat has not figured out how to stick his little paw up the chute to "self feed" but I can see how this could be a problem. Also watch it to make sure the correct portions are being dispensed. I had an episode where only one piece of kibble was dispensed...my cat was not very happy. I replaced the batteries and all is good. So moral of the story, it works great but don't rely on it 100% still monitor how much your cat or cats are eating.
Not Bad December 31, 2008 C. Pellegrino I purchased this product a while ago, and I too found that it was a REAL pain to program it. I eventually got the hang of it, but I still feel like it could be programmed alot easier. I finally got tired of programming it and went looking for another automatic feeder. It was a long search, but I just found a really good selection of feeders on the petfeedercentral website. I ended up ordering an Ergo feeder. I haven't received it yet, but I hope it's a good one!
Good feeder December 31, 2008 Julia Custer (arnold, md) We've used this feeder for several years for our golden retriever. I finally have to buy a new one because a mouse chewed part of the soft plastic food gate off. so it's not mouse-proof. We occasionally have hiccups where the thing jams and food won't come out. it's hard to tell whether it has fed your dog or not, because the screen interface makes no sense. But overall a reliable little feeder, and way better than similar priced models on the market. there is room for improvement, but we haven't found anything better.
Disappointing December 25, 2008 Pamster (Los Angeles, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Initially, I liked this product. I have what's billed as the newer version, and it seems to have corrected some of the problems described in earlier reviews. However, we ran into a few problems with it, anyway. The set up was very simple - it was easy to set up the feeding times, and it was nice that the portion for each feeding could be set independently, so one meal could be a different amount than the others. However, I was disappointed that the amounts were so limited - as in 1/4 cup, 1/2 cup, etc. Certainly isn't meant to feed small portions. Plus my fat cat needs to have her amount of food adjusted downward as she loses weight, and that's impossible to do. Our cat was able to get her paw up and get additional food out whenever she wanted some. And when the canister is full, the weight of the food causes food to drop through the plastic dispensing fingers. So extra food was frequently available. Needless to say, the fat cat didn't lose any weight with this feeder. I think it's a fine feeder if absolute amount of feeding isn't as important. If you want food to be dispensed a couple of times a day when you're at work, this would work. But I wouldn't depend on accuracy with it.
