Product Description This electromagnetic pet door is designed to selectively admit only pets wearing a collar carrying a magnet. Normally, the flap is prevented from opening into the house by an electromagnetic catch, thus preventing stray pets from entering your house. However, when your pet approaches wearing the magnet, a detector sited in the outer edge of the body molding senses the magnet and the electromagnetic catch is automatically depressed. Your pet may then push open the flap with its nose to enter the house. As soon as your pet has passed through the flap, the catch returns to its normal position so that following pets without a magnet are prevented from entering. Pets may exit the house without wearing a magnet. Flap dimension is 7"W x 7.5"H. The pet door comes with two collar keys. Note that there are two types: The Dog Door version includes two larger keys for dogs; the Large Cat version includes two smaller keys for cats. Spares are available from Patio Pacific.

No bad May 21, 2007 Philip Dresman (San Diego, Ca, USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I should have got a smaller door. The cats neck needs to be close to the bottom in order to activate the latch, so I raised the door up which seems to help. If only they came with instructions in Cattish so we did not spend so much time pushing the cats back & forth.
Works well and IS racoon proof! November 22, 2006 tomh (Newton, MA United States) 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
We had a Cat-mate (also known as pet-mate and maybe another name) door for a number of years, and it worked great to solve our problem, which was keeping raccoons out. Then it broke recently after four years or so, and I replaced it (or so I thought), but with the Staywell cat door. All the same idea: cat wears a magnet on the collar, magnet flips the latch open and your cat comes in; other animals stay out. The only problem with the Staywell is that it is so flimsy that it would keep out only the least determined visitor. The cat-mate has a nice magnet: it has two slots that the collar slides though, so doesn't dangle or flop around. It also comes with two magnets. It uses a 9-Volt battery, which lasts for around a year and has a solid mechanism for ensuring a positive latch. This is just one of those examples where two apparently equal products are, in the execution, dramatically different.
